Joseph Marolla, Ph.D.

Joseph Marolla, Ph.D., came to Virginia Commonwealth University in 1975 with concentration areas in social psychology and self esteem and has since conducted research on deviance, particularly involving rape and convicted rapists.

In 1992, Marolla became chair of the Sociology and Anthropology Department, guiding it until 2001 when he became the first director of the Center for Teaching Excellence. Marolla currently serves as the assistant to the provost for instruction while directing the CTE. He also teaches in the Department of Sociology and the Sport Management Center.

Marolla earned a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Denver and received his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Rhode Island.
