Charges for electronic theses and dissertations

There are no charges for submitting an electronic thesis or dissertation to the university. Information on outside binderies is listed at the bottom of this Web page.

ProQuest charges

ProQuest (formerly UMI) provides publishing and preservation services for theses and dissertations worldwide. The company’s thesis and dissertation databases have been designated a Library of Record by the U.S. Library of Congress and will be kept in perpetuity.

Dissertations

VCU requires that all doctoral dissertations be published with ProQuest. ProQuest charges the basic fee of $65 for dissertations using their Traditional Publishing option. Dissertations are submitted and paid for directly by the student through UMI/ProQuest’s ETD Administrator site
for VCU.

ProQuest’s publishing services include the creation of a microfilm master of the dissertation and the preparation and listing of the abstract in “Dissertations Abstracts International.” The DAI subject databases are widely available to scholars through their professional societies, libraries and research centers.

Theses

VCU does not require master’s theses publication with ProQuest; however, the service is available to those desiring it. ProQuest charges the basic fee of $55 for theses using their Traditional Publishing option. Theses are submitted and paid for directly by the student through UMI/ProQuest’s ETD Administrator site for VCU.

ProQuest’s publishing services include the creation of a microfilm master of the thesis, and the preparation and listing of the abstract in “Master’s Abstracts International.”

Optional services

ProQuest offers optional services to authors for a fee, including Open Access, copyright registration, and binding, but those services are not required. More information about ProQuest’s services can be found at the ETD Administrator site.

Binding hard copies of theses and dissertations

As VCU now requires electronic submissions, students who desire author, or personal, bound print copies of their work will select a binder for the work and pay for the binding themselves. Commercial binders for binding personal copies of theses and dissertations are posted below. The list includes establishments that can bind copies for students, but it is not an endorsement of the sources.

Blue Ridge Book Conservation
For thesis binding, the cost is usually $80 per volume, unless oversized. This includes a computer printed acid-free paper label. We also do gold-tooled labels on leather which cost an additional $20 minimum and are priced according to the size of label and length of titling involved. We use superior quality materials (i.e., linen blend cloth, acid-free fine papers for endpapers) and all the work is done by hand, so consequently it is somewhat more expensive than binding done by a large commercial bindery.

Hand bookbinding and restoration of all sorts. A professional bindery located in Fredericksburg, Va., offering custom thesis binding, chose from dozens of colors of book-cloths and decorated papers. Hand work like ours means you can design the binding to stand out from the rest or to blend in to the crowd. Titles stamped in gold or silver, or custom labels made. Send me a digital version and I can print as well. Turnaround is usually less than two weeks; expedited binding can often be accomplished in 48 hours.
